A Paper Race

Camper, Volvo Ocean Race, Worldwide Including Sanya, China, Miami, USA, and Lorient, France

Event sponsorship roadshow of retail

One of the world’s leading footwear designers, Camper, sponsored the Emirates Team New Zealand for the world’s premier offshore racing event, the Volvo Ocean Race. The travelling pavilion that followed the ocean racers around the world was designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, in his signature innovative approach utilizing paper and cardboard tubing as a construction materials. The daring and creative event sponsorship idea required unique materials and inventive craftsmanship.

Created from cardboard columns of varying width, the circular pavilion was the stand-out structure in the race village, contrasted against the surrounding square tented and metal structures.

A main structure made from cardboard tubes of different diameters that nest one within another, allowed the six-meter-high pavilion to compactly travel to different locations.

The events sponsorship marketing design required a singular inventive approach, developed specifically for this unique custom environment, to easily erect and dismantle the custom building at each location.

The 20-meter diameter round pavilion, was engineered to be easily installed and dismantled in a short amount of time and built to withstand the possibility of severe weather conditions in the world harbors.

Activated in multiple locations including Sanya, China, Miami, USA, and Lorient, France — at each stopover the pavilion featured a wide range of activities for all ages. Branded environment designs included an interactive kiosk, jazz sessions, gin and tonic master classes as well as a retail store design with a Camper shop selling a wide range of Camper Emirates Team New Zealand merchandise, and of course, Camper’s iconic shoes.
