The Sports Museum of America, created in partnership with over 50 single-sports Halls of Fame and Museums, National Governing Bodies and other sports organizations, is the first and only museum that celebrates a range of professional and amateur sports. Located in the financial district of New York City, the Sports Museum of America is the new permanent home of the Heisman Trophy and the annual Heisman trophy award ceremony. It is also home to the Billie Jean King International Women’s Sports Centre – the first and only hall of fame dedicated to the athletes and pioneers of women’s sports.
The museum features a multitude of dynamic, interactive, multimedia exhibits and collections fabricated and installed by maltbie, a kubik company, one of the finest and most experienced specialists for visitor centers, museums and exhibition projects. The exhibits showcase the rich history of sports, featuring over 800 artifacts, 1100 photos, 20 original films including iconic images and memorabilia donated by individual athletes and private collectors.
maltbie was engaged to work on three of the main galleries comprising approximately 10,000 square feet of exhibit space including the Billie Jean King International Women’s Sports Centre, The Heisman Trophy Gallery and The Hall of Halls, said Gary Brooks, Executive Vice President, maltbie. In addition to on-site project management and exhibit fabrication, we were also involved in creating some amazing interactive displays that will allow visitors an unparalleled sporting experience. There really is something there for every sports enthusiast, regardless of their specific interest – where else could a family compete with each other in a NASCAR tire changing exhibit?
The Heisman Gallery not only presents the history of the award, it also emphasizes the attributes required of a Heisman winner. The gallery recognizes and pays tribute to the men that have won this most prestigious award in College Football.
It was great to work with Zubatkin Associates on this project. And even though there were challenges with the extensive renovations and the ongoing construction throughout the exhibit installs, it was an amazing experience to be able to design and install an exhibit that lets visitors touch and take a picture with the original Heisman Trophy, said Al Darrone, Project Manager, maltbie.
