Kubik Storyteller Series: Dylan Welsh

Behind every massive build and tight deadline is an incredible team. Get to know the unique faces, stories, and collective ambition that power Kubik’s client successes every single day.

Dylan Welsh, Director of Creative Technology, is shaping profound customer journeys and unique environments through cutting-edge technology. He specializes in sparking curiosity and delivering immersive, experiential realities that truly bring spaces to life. What Dylan appreciates most about Kubik is the seamless blend of imagination and technical innovation, where complex concepts are transformed into unforgettable human experiences.

What is your role at Kubik? What are your everyday responsibilities?

Dylan: I lead Kubik’s Creative Technology department. The simplest way I describe the work is this: we look for the moments in a customer journey where we can amplify one aspect with intentional elevation. Sometimes that lands as a digital experience, sometimes as a physical interaction, and most often as a mix of the two. Day to day I am involved in 95% of the RFPs coming out of Kubik, shaping the technology vision early, pressure-testing feasibility, and making sure what we promise in the pitch is what we can deliver on show site.

Can you map out your career journey for us? What brought you to Kubik?

Dylan: Most of my career has been spent on the same pursuit from different seats: producing, leading technology integration, running a digital department, and co-founding a studio. “What ties it all together is bringing moments of wonder and adventure into unique environments, then making them stand up in a real space, on a real deadline.” Kubik was the natural place to keep doing that, partly because I had been a vendor here and already knew the standard expected in their built environments, and partly because the department was ready to grow into something more than digital services.

What’s the best thing about working at Kubik?

Dylan: The people, first. It is easy to lead when you have a crew this strong and this dedicated getting the work done. A close second is the autonomy to build a new practice here, taking a department that started inside IT and shaping it into something that contributes creatively from the very first client conversation.

Why do you think Creative Technology is important for the customer journey as much as it is for Kubik?

Dylan: Creative technology earns its place across the whole customer journey, though it does its most obvious work at the front of it: pulling someone in from fifty feet away, then giving them a reason to stay once they cross the threshold. The part people underrate is what comes next, when the right interaction quietly removes a barrier between a visitor and the thing they actually came to understand. For Kubik, the other half of the value is proof. The right analytics let us put dwell time, traffic patterns and engagement into real numbers, so a booth stops being judged on how it looked and starts being judged on how it performed.

What gives you energy and motivation at work?

Dylan: My motivation is rooted in building lasting spaces of inclusion and play. That holds for what we make, where every environment carries its own challenge and its own chance to capture attention through a creative use of technology. It holds just as much for how we work inside Kubik, because a department should feel like a place people want to be. High-fives and big hugs where applicable.

What does “work-life balance” mean to you?

Dylan: I protect evenings and weekends for family. The work is demanding and show dates do not move, so the boundary has to be deliberate rather than hopeful. Any opportunity to celebrate with or for my family and friend’s wins, every time.

Would you rather: use AI to anticipate an issue before it happens v/s an AI that instantly resolve it after it occurs? Why?

Dylan: Anticipate it before it happens, every time. Show site is unforgiving, and a failure during move-in is already too late to solve gracefully. Knowing a problem is coming while there is still room to act is worth far more than a fast fix once the floor is open.

Outside of 9-to-5, what would we find you engaging in?

Dylan: Arduino and soldering projects with my 10-year-old, rock climbing with my partner, and riding trails & dirt jumping on two wheels. I am a professional hobbyist, so you might also find me practicing my lock picking, building RC cars, or tending to my garden.

Emoji: What’s your current workplace emoji?
